AI Boom Drives Prices Up
Everyone is super hyped on AI Agents – LLMs and Harneses – starting mid 2022 and accelerating from mid 2025. However the impact of this boom is being felt by regular consumers and businesses.
The massive demand has seen memory and chip manufacturers switch to AI manufacturing (of High Bandwidth Memory chip) which is a focus while providers demand and buy up all the memory – DDR5 RAM and NAND flash memory. The main buyers are the publicly listed hyperscalers , neoclouds and related businesses.
This forces cloud providers to pass on the higher price to consumers – even if they are not demanding AI related products or workloads.
Providers like Hetznet, OVHCloud and Netcup have raised their pricing from 9 to 37% in recent times.
Locally Hostking has been forced to raise prices 27.6% on their VMs due to the increase from the supplier.
The impact of the extreme and at times artificial AI boom is also seen when buying a NVME, SSD, graphics card or other consumer computer components – A SSD that used to cost R2000 for 2TB is now R3000. This is a severe market distortion that is due correction as the technology is meant to deflate for like-for-like components over time.
Qualitative Factors
The table exposes price, RAM, CPU and storage. These are not the only factors to consider, it is up to you to investigate and decide with other qualitative factors.
For example:
- Where is the datacenter? For a Kenyan service one would prefer a VPS from a provider with African infrastructure like HostAfrica.
- NVMe SSD storage vs Sata SSD
- Virtualisation system (eg. KVM) and level of developer control
- Level of Automation: API, CLI, MCP
- Application templates / one-click installs eg. WordPress, n8n, Docker, Supabase and Wireguard
